My name is Cecilia, a girl from Sweden who presently is a volunteer in Serres, Greece. I work among other in a radio station called RodonFM and it was here I came in contact with this anti racism group of the city, Youth Voices Against Racism, who’s blog you are reading now. They had come to me to create a “spot” that was going to be played on the radio to promote their group. I gladly helped them because it is such an important subject, a subject that is the root of many problems in our today’s society. It leads to segregation between people, a segregation growing stronger if we don’t do something about it. The first thing that comes to your mind after hearing the word “racism” is probably the conflicts between people from different “races”, mostly black and white people. But there are so many more categories of racism to also have in mind. The inequalities between men and women are in my opinion the most important one together with discrimination of homosexual people.
It is for me impossible to understand how anyone can be a racist. How can anyone find a person worth more or less just because he or she is of a special gender, got a certain color on the skin or what believes he/she's got. These things shouldn't have anything of importance because the things we should value are on the insides. We could compare it with a birthday present. You don’t care much about the paper because it is the inside that matters. And people really are present. Or no, people are more like thousands of presents in one package, surprising you over and over again! But anyway, what I wanted to say is that racism is something that has to be worked against, like this group of fantastic young people are doing. I think it is especially good and successful that young persons are taking initiative for things like this. As we young people are the future the mentality needs to be change from the roots and who do youngsters listen best to? Other young people. So all you young persons out there, keep fighting!
